This contemplative approach to an intermediate/advanced class combines somatic practices, improvisation, and contemporary techniques and is designed to cultivate dancing that is fully embodied, expressive, and satisfying. Grounded in a strong foundation of functional anatomy, we will practice sensing alignment of the bones as a way of finding balanced muscular support throughout our joints, both on the floor and upright. Considering the body as a laboratory, we will work with improvisational practices as a way to investigate our kinesthetic and perceptual relationship to one's self, one another and the space we share. Phrase work will emphasize balancing ease with effort and momentum with control all while attending to an intelligent use of gravity, efficient use of energy, dynamic use of space and clarity of form. Emphasis is on connecting the body from the inside out, in order to fully inhabit the body as we are dancing it.
