Modern Dance for the Returning Dancer
Virginia Matthews is a choreographer and dancer who began her career in New York at Sarah Lawrence College under the mentorship of Bessie Schoenberg and The Merce Cunningham Studio. She was a founding member of The Margaret Jenkins Dance Co. in San Francisco. She co-directed Dances for 1 and 2 and created her own company in 1983. Virginia received a National Endowment for the Arts choreography award and an Izzie in 2020 for “Approaching 70 - 50 Years of a Life in Dance”. Since moving to Sonoma County she has established teen and multi-age companies, co-founded SoCo Dance Theater and is the director of Downtown Dance/Art Space, where she teaches dance and Pilates to all ages. She created Modern Dance for the Returning Dancer class as a way for dancers to reconnect with their love of dance.
