At once a site-specific performance meditation and a technology/embodiment puzzle, listening creates an opening asks how we listen and what we hear. Leading in a listening state, from a Victorian storefront through the alleys and parks of ODC’s Mission neighborhood, into and out of the ODC Theater, to end looking out over the rooftops of the city at dusk, listening creates an opening poses the further question of what we do next – once we have started to hear?
Mary Armentrout Dance Theater (MADT) is a San Francisco-based intermedia collective that creates hybrid performance works that unravel simple-looking things like time, place, identity, and community back into the absorbing, complicated, felt, and lived things they are. MADT is the collaborative team of Mary Armentrout performance/video, Evelyn Ficarra sound/installation, and Ian Winters video/installation. listening creates started as a commissioned project of EMPAC, the Experimental Media and Performance Arts Center at RPI

2019 Walking Distance Dance Festival
Sunday, May 12, 2019
The 2019 Walking Distance Dance Festival features West Coast choreographic voices from L.A. and the Bay in the heart of the San Francisco’s Mission District. This edition, with outdoor and roving performances, as well as dance presentations across ODC’s two-building campus, invites deep listening both within the body and across landscapes and public space. Join us to dip into the speculative future, consider biorhythms of the heart, and enjoy a playful appearance by a cast of canines.
