Stephanie Hewett is a mover, dance-maker, and teacher currently based in Oakland, CA. Originally from the Bronx, New York, Hewett relocated to the Bay Area in 2015 to pursue an MFA in Dance from Mills College. She studied at the Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London and is a graduate of Fiorello H. LaGuardia HS of Music & Art and the Performing Arts in New York City. She was recently on faculty at the College of San Mateo, and is now focusing on creating a new experimental work through the Edge Residency at Counterpulse, debuting in April 2019. Her work is primarily process-driven and aims to highlight and fortify the multiplicity of identity and desire.

Class serves as an incubator for the playful, unabashed self to emerge//evolve. Students will activate the physical body through improvisational tasks while engaging with the inanimate parts of the space in other to reimagine their shapeshifting capacities. A strong emphasis will be placed on cultivating community through joy-based explorations, experiencing the voice as an extension of the moving body, and reinventing playtime.
