Under the visionary leadership of School Director Kimi Okada, and Jam Co–Artistic Director Tanya Bello, the ODC/ Dance Jam is the Bay Area’s premier contemporary dance company for teens. Members are uniquely challenged with the creation of new works and the complexities of training in multiple dance techniques across a rigorous, five-day-per week schedule.
The ODC/ Dance Jam dancers experience the rare privilege of performing repertoire by the celebrated choreographers of the professional company, ODC/ Dance (Brenda Way, KT Nelson, Kimi Okada, and Mia J. Chong), as well as a stellar roster of renowned guest choreographers, including Dexandro Montalvo, Amy Foley, Chuck Wilt, Katie Faulkner, Erika Chong Shuch, Robin Dekkers, Crystaldawn Bell, Babatunji Johnson, Brandon “Private” Freeman, and Doug Gillespie. Throughout the year, students also engage in mentorship within the Youth and Teen Program and are offered the invaluable opportunity to work directly alongside the adult professional company, ODC/Dance.

Beyond world-class training and performance, the ODC/ Dance Jam offers something truly exceptional that few youth companies provide; a comprehensive, hands-on training in production. Guided by ODC/ Dance’s professional staff, members actively participate in producing their annual home season. This is a rare, precious addition to a dancer’s education.
- Fostering Leadership and Ownership: By taking the reins of their own production, through fundraising, marketing, and public relations, the ODC/ Dance Jam members cultivate deep administrative acumen, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of what it takes to sustain a life in the arts as well as translates directly into standout college applications and essential skill sets for any future professional career both inside and outside the arts.
- Building the “Complete Artist”: Dancers don’t just step onto a stage. They learn how the stage is built. Understanding lighting, stage management, and technical theater transforms them into collaborative, hyper-aware performers.
- Cultivating Industry Expertise: Navigating the complexities of professional production gives young dancers a confidence that usually takes years of professional industry experience to acquire.
