How do we serve? How are we served? Who serves whom, and where do the lines blur? Asking these questions led Risa Jaroslow & Dancers, vocalist/composer Amy X Neuburg, and guest performers to create At Your Service. In this moment when greed and abuse dominate the news, Risa Jaroslow & Dancers look at ways in which we serve each other (or fail to do so) personally and professionally, with a focus on the underappreciated among us. At Your Service is dance, music, songs and stories that delight, edify, sometimes disturb, and ultimately help us see many of our fellow humans in a different light.
Company Bio:
At Your Service is Risa Jaroslow & Dancers third presentation at ODC since Jaroslow relocated to the Bay Area from New York in 2013. Last season’s west coast premiere of Jaroslow and Lisa Mezzacappa’s Touch/Bass was described in the SF Examiner as “an extraordinary showcase of Jaroslow and Mezzacappa’s creativity, and belief in the power of relationships.” Resist/Surrender had its west coast premiere at ODC in 2015 and was nominated for an Isadora Duncan Dance Award as Best Revival. Jaroslow has been a guest choreographer at Sonoma State University and at Mills College and has been a guest mentor for Margaret Jenkins Dance Company’s CHIME program. While based in New York her company performed at most of the New York venues for new dance as well as nationally and internationally. She has taught at many colleges and universities and has lead workshops for a range of community-based groups. Her work has been supported by, among others, the Ford Foundation, the Trust for Mutual Understanding, the Jerome Robbins Trust, New Music USA, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, the Kenneth Rainin Foundation and most recently, the Phyllis C Wattis Foundation.
