Bahiya Movement was founded in 2011 by mother/daughter team Afia and Nafi Thompson. Bahiya is an Arabic word which means Beautiful.

Our vision is to break barriers regarding body image and self-esteem through dance. Bahiya Movement believes that body size, type, or gender does not define a dancer but that skill, technical training, creativity and love for dance defines the artist.

Bahiya Movement is a fusion dance company of African, Jazz, House, Hip-hop, Contemporary, and Freestyle movements and seeks to foster personal artistic expression and encourage the development of artistic voices. Bahiya Movement goal is to create opportunities for company members to showcase their own work and build a community of support.

Bahiya Movement would like to work with dancers that represent a wide spectrum of body types, gender-orientation and technical experience, including African, Jazz, Hip-hop, House, and Good Vibes.

PLUS SIZE BODIES ARE HIGHLY ENCOURGED TO AUDITION!!!

Dancers will be invited to participate in a six-month introduction, voluntary period where they will participate in weekly company rehearsals beginning in May. Possible paid positions will be offered at a later date for performances in the West Wave Dance Festival at the ODC Dance Commons (Fall 2020).
