Before Bakkhai Before is a dance film by Maxe Crandall (playwright) and Hope Mohr (choreographer), inspired by the tragedies of gender reveal parties and Anne Carson’s Bakkhai. Featuring performances by Belinda He, Karla Quintero, Annie Danger, Danny Thanh Nguyen, and Cliff Hengst.

C*NT II: The Void

In C*NT II: The Void, Monique Jenkinson/Fauxnique uses the medium of video to reframe and magnify aspects of her provocative 2017 work C*NT, or, the Horror of Nothing to See. Departing from the earlier work’s undercurrent of feminist rage, this iteration proposes a kind of ceremony to reckon with and shift the philosophical and literal ground on which we stand. As a feminist performing drag, Jenkinson propels her own body into the history of drag’s complex relationship to femaleness and emerges with a sense of rigor and humor intact.

  • Hope Mohr & Maxe Crandall

    Maxe Crandall is a poet, playwright, and director. He is the author of The Nancy Reagan Collection, a performance novel about AIDS and intergenerational memory, which made the NYPL’s Best 100 Books of 2020, LitHub’s 65 Favorite Books of 2020, and is a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in Transgender Poetry. He is also the founder of the theater company Beautiful Moments in Popular Culture. Maxe is Interim Associate Director of the Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at Stanford University.

    Hope Mohr is choreographer, curator, and writer. She makes multi-disciplinary dances that “convey emotional and socio-political contents that just ride underneath the surface of a rigorous vocabulary.” (Dance View Times). Through close readings of the body, she deconstructs movement to excavate strangeness and freedom. Her new book, Shifting Cultural Power: Case Studies and Questions in Performance, is forthcoming from the National Center for Choreography. She co-directs The Bridge Project, which creates and supports equity-driven live art that builds community and centers artists as agents of change.

  • Monique Jenkinson/Fauxnique

    Fauxnique is the drag queen alter-ego of artist/ choreographer/dancer Monique Jenkinson, lauded for her ‘campy, intellectual juxtaposition of pop culture and high art.’ She sees the performance of femininity as a powerful, vulnerable, and subversive act. Her solo works have toured nationally and internationally and her memoir Faux Queen will be published in 2022 by Amble Press.
